# Repair or Replace? How to Decide When Your HVAC System Is Aging

It's the question every homeowner eventually faces: sink another few hundred dollars into an aging system, or invest in a new one? Here's the honest math we walk customers through.

## The 5,000 rule

Multiply the age of the unit by the repair cost. If the result is over $5,000, replacement usually makes more sense. A 12-year-old furnace needing a $500 repair scores 6,000 — time to talk about replacement.

## Refrigerant matters

Older AC systems using R-22 refrigerant are expensive to recharge because R-22 is phased out. If your system uses it and develops a leak, replacement is almost always the right call.

## Energy savings are real
